Initial Idea Outline

Synopsis

James Grimmsdottir is a man in his late 20s, lives in a farm outside of London; His life had been mostly consisted of working tirelessly on his father's farm during the day. He does not enjoy it, thus it is understandable that when it gets dark, James spends his after hours on Dreamland Dating - a futuristic / dystopian dating software that allows users to proxy friends and partners (This site allows people to pick a category before reading one of many scripts which create a synthetic relationship between two people).  James' passion had formed from his mothers profession into computing, a thing which consumed her and made her leave her family to pursue a computing job - leading to James' inexperience in dating.

Whilst browsing on Dreamland Dating during one of his usual after-work session, James matches with a beautiful girl, called Josie. Josie comes from a completely different background - Josie lives in central London, is one of 8 children, and a frequent user of Dreamland Dating: Josie has been on hundereds of dates, and can be considered a professional catfisher. Both character's insecurities lead to both altering their online profiles, and therefore, both catfish each other and as they get catfished themselves. Eventually, Josie asks to meet up with James who initially declines, but due to his embaressment and taunting he recieved from his friends, decides to translate his eagerness to prove them wrong, takes the risk and agrees to meet with Josie.

When James and Josie finally meet, the two decide to go out for dinner, which has been preselected by the Dreamland Dating artificial inteligence, they are surprised to see they have both been catfished. However, whats more surprised than the two is the artificial intelegince function of the app, and when it recognizes the fault, begins to form odd, random and shocking dialogue set for the two to reanact for them to recieve a high rating of each other on the app. The app's code absoloutly , and thus also the date; the AI begins to tell the other to rudely describe the other. The two eventually have enough of the generated dialogue, and do what none of them have done before: speak truthly with eachother. Eventually, James and Josie learn they don't need technology to find love and should embrace who they are.

Characters

James

James (Also known as Hanna) has been a farmer his whole life and has never experienced city life. He is a man in his late 20's who has very little experience with woman, and shows rather socially insecure avoidance. Contrastingly, he is recognisable by an alias in the online world when he plays his video games and

Josie
Josie's character (aka Adam) should act as a representation of insecurity and conformity to whatever is a popular public value. Josie's family on the other hand are all succsessful users of Dreamland Dating and being the odd one out makes her feel useless and defeated. She is in her mid 20's.

Narrative

Character arcs
In this film, James should posses a Growth character arc and Josie should have a character arc which progresses and transforms.

Narrative theories
-Toddorov's theory of equillibrium: although they live unhappily, at the beggining both James and Josie are at an equillibrium.
-Levi strauss Binary Oppositons
-Certain Archtypes
-Campbelles Monomyth

Sound
Diegetic
  • When James is working the farm, animal sounds should be heard, such as cow moos and horse neighs; The wind rustling through crop should be heard and sounds of tractors and sprinkles should be sometimes noticeable in the background.
  • In london, sounds of vehicles, birds, bystanders. The spectator should be able to hear the sounds of food being cooked while James and Josie are in the restaurant.
  • In the prark, ^^
  • In Josie's house, voices and screams of her siblings and parents can always be heard as she has a large number of siblings, which should be noticible in her household.

Non-diegetic

Aesthetics

...

Mise en Scene

Throughout the film, i would like the theme of a dystopian near future to be very prominent. Most bystanders, including Josie, should wear abstract costumes and edgy clothing. Wherever available, the frame should show some sort of technological gimic or gadget - such as the phones having holograms. Also, to show (and not necessarily tell) the spectator that the film is set in the future, news reports should label events which are now realistically foreseeable in the near future as present or state they have already occurred.

The brief

I will make (i), with a narrative twist and a narrative which portrays a conflict between two central characters and develops a single character also
